What In-Office Whitening is
Performed in the dental clinic using relatively high concentrations of rapidly reacting hydrogen peroxide, 35–40%.The process: step by step
- To protect the patient’s gums, a protective barrier needs to be placed.
- A thin layer of whitening gel will be applied to teeth for 20 minutes, with 2-3 applications in one visit.
- Total 40 -60 minutes of treatment time.
- Patients can see immediate results; in most cases, teeth will continue to whiten 24-48 hours after treatment.
To accurately measure results,
'Before photographs' are always taken of the teeth.
A pre-operative cleaning may then be performed to remove any extrinsic stains before the bleaching process begins.
A 'Comparative shade change photograph' is then taken at least 1 week after bleaching, using an objective colorimeter reference indicator.
This provides precise documentation of a brighter smile.
How In-office whitening works
After the activated gel is applied, active oxygen molecules from the whitening agent can pass through the enamel of the teeth, where they react with large discolored molecules that cause tooth discoloration. By breaking larger molecules into smaller ones, most exogenous stains are dispersed.
